Cosmetics and Your Body

Let's discuss chemicals in your cosmetic products that could be affecting your health! There are quite a few of them but I will only be discussing a handful here.

Benzophenone & Related Compounds

Benzophenone is found in products such as lip balm and nail polish to protect the products from UV light. Spin-off chemicals of benzophenone, such as benzophenone-2 (BP2) and oxybenzone (benzophenone-3 or BP3) are usually found in sunscreen. Benzophenone is persistent, toxic, and accumulates. These chemicals are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, and organ system toxicity.

Butylated Compounds

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are used as preservatives in many cosmetics and personal care items. These are also used as  food preservatives. These chemicals are linked to endocrine disruption, organ-system toxicity, and several others.

Fragrance

What is "fragrance"? Many cosmetic companies have this listed on their product but nothing further. This lack of information keeps consumers in the dark when it comes to knowing what is in these products.

Lead And Other Heavy Metals

Heavy metals like lead, arsenic, mercury, aluminum, zinc, chromium and iron are found in many personal care products including lipstick, whitening toothpaste, eyeliner and nail color.

An overload of heavy metals in the system can lead to toxicity and become dangerous.

Phthalates

These chemicals are linked to endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and cancer.

Phthalates have been banned in other countries but are still being used in products in the U.S.

Quaternium-15

Quaternium-15 is a skin toxicant and allergen. If exposed to this chemical for long periods of time, hairdresser or janitor, it could become dangerous.

(If you do work around this chemical, I can address any health concerns you might have!)

Resorcinol

Resorcinol, commonly found in hair dyes and acne medication, is toxic in higher doses. This chemical can disrupt the nervous system, lead to respiratory issues, and cause havoc on the endocrine system leading to thyroid dysfunction.

Toluene

Toluene is used in nail products and hair dyes. Exposure can cause temporary effects: headaches, dizziness and cracked skin. More serious issues could be reproductive damage and respiratory complications.

There are many, many more but this is a good starting point. Know what you're putting in and on your body, education is power! I challenge you to start buying non-toxic makeup or to go without, then see if you notice a difference in your health. -Sara

1 Peter 3:3-4 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight
