Caffeine and Your Body

Have you ever skipped your daily energy drink and developed a headache? Have you ever felt like you can't function without your morning coffee? Let's discuss why this happens.

Caffeine and the Brain

Caffeine is a stimulant drug that affects your brain and nervous system, meaning that it increases the activity. Caffeine interferes with the neurotransmitters in our brain. These neurotransmitters can send information at the speed of light. There is also a chemical called, dopamine, inside those transmitters. Dopamine is the chemical of reward, pleasure, and motivation and it can be addicting! Caffeine slows the dopamine from leaving the brain and this is what might lead to a caffeine addiction.

When your brain becomes dependent on receiving this drug, it can lead to headaches, fatigue, and brain fog if it doesn't receive it. Caffeine narrows the blood vessels around the brain. When the body does not receive it's normal supply, the blood vessels enlarge. This results in an increase of blood flow around the brain and nervous system. Pressure builds and a headache is the outcome of this problem.

An addiction to caffeine can cause an inability to do anything without it!

Other Side Effects of Caffeine Consumption

-dehydration

-rapid heart rate

-anxiety and restlessness

-effects on cortisol levels and metabolism

How to End the Addiction

Just like any other addiction, if you stop suddenly, there will be withdrawal symptoms. The best way to end the madness is to slowly taper back on your intake amount. Below is a photo of the caffeine content in common drinks.

Most popular energy drinks have up to 300mg and in the fine print state to not drink more than 2 per day. I suggest none, ever! I loved energy drinks years ago but refuse to touch them now as they are awful for your heart and mind. I suggest you get off energy drinks for your health and your family's sake!
